1912 Theresa Esterman Jewish Gravestone Photo, died in Hackney, London

#788 Jeiwsh genealogy: Esterman Family

On front, etched in large gravestone: "In Loving memory of Theresa, Dearly Loved Daughter of Joseph & Susan Esterman, who died Dec 25th 1912, in her 15th year. Dearly mourned by her Bereaved Parents, Grandparents, Relatives and all who knew her. "To live in hearts we leave behind is not to die" May her Dear Soul Rest in Peace."  Photo type: Original Antique Victorian Cabinet Card Photograph. Photographer: Unmarked, Unknown.

This is a beautiful old Victorian mourning related Cabinet Card photograph of a recently dug grave and a memorial to a much loved daughter. The gravestone is reprentative of a cut and severed column, to signify a life cut short. This symbol is often seen in Victorian era mourning customs. Theresa was from a family who could afford to commission such an amazing monument to her life. It is a Jewish grave with Hebrew writing on each side of the large stone. Theresa died on Christmas Day of 1912. The reverse is blank, and the photographer is unknown.

Theresa's father, Joseph Esterman, was born in 1869, and her mother Susan Esterman was born in 1879. Both parents were born in London. Her father's occupation is listed as a "Wholesale Warehouseman." Theresa's grandparents were Harris Goldstein and Rachel Goldstein, both born in Poland. It us assumed these are Susan's parents, thus her mother's maiden name would be Susan Goldstein Esterman. This is a beautiful old piece, found in Linlithgow, West Lothian, Scotland.

We do not know the location of Theres'a grave, but  assume it is in a Jewish Cemetery in London. Any help or correction appreciated, email Debra here. Estermann is an alternative spelling.
