Emma Louise Tanner was born on February 14, 1849, in Providence, Rhode Island, her father, Benjamin Tanner, was 27 and her mother, Lydia tanner, was 24. She had two brothers and one sister. She died on February 8, 1871 in her hometown, at the age of 21. She married Theodore Smith.
