HISTORICAL NOTE: Jacob Shew 1826-1879 was a famous San Francisco Photographer with much info and history of his work online. He was born in 1826 at Watertown, NY, the son of Godfrey I. Shew and Elizabeth Betsey Beecher Shew. He was in partnership with renowned daguerreotype artist John Plumbe Jr as Plumbe & Shew. He went to California for the Gold Rush in 1849, and became an important American photographer, especially of California Pioneer Scenes. He took his own life a year after his gallery burned down in 1879, at the age of 53.

A stunning image of a young San Francisco Victorian woman in ringlets, jewelry and a velvet coat by this skilled photographer. A historical San Fran Jacobson family piece, found in New England. We found both Mary Jacobsen and Margaret Jacobson born in this time period and living in San Fran and no other women with name starting with M.
