1870s Mrs. H. Ross Tintype, by Philadelphia Photographer Lewis Horning
#181 Found in Exeter, Devon, England:
On reverse: "Mrs. H. Ross" is handwritten in in black ballpoint pen. Photo type: Original Vintage Victorian CDV carte de visite sized Tintype Photograph. Photographer: A beautiful dark printed purple backmarked is adhered, which reads: "Made and Finished in 5 minutes at the City Photograph Rooms, 1109 Market St., Preserve the pictures of your deceased friends, old daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, and all kinds of pictures copied onto card or Life-Size to almost those taken from life-Our $2 per dozen card pictures are equal to those made in any other gallery in the city for $3.00. Your patronage is solicited, L. Horning, formerly of 820 Arch & 56 N. 8th St. Operator and Agent" Photographer: Lewis Horning 1834-1909 was the owner of the following 19th century Philadelphia Photograph Studios: City Photograph Rooms, 1109 Market St; L. Horning, formerly of 820 Arch & 56 N. 8th St.; Union Photographic Rooms and The Parlor Gallery, which catered to African American and biracial clientele of Philadelphia.
This beautiful old tintype depicts a young woman of about 20 years old wearing a very stylish Victorian riding hat. Interestingly, it was found in Exeter, Devon, England, and it is assumed she has English Ross family ties. We feel there is a good chance it was removed from an early photo album, and someone, in contemporary times, kindly wrote her name on the reverse to record her identity. A beautiful piece, with a beautiful and unusual purple Horning photographer advertising backmark.
Size: 2.5 x 4 inches
Note: Hello from ~debra. I have spent years collecting over 10,000 ID’d lost family photos & paper from US flea markets & antique shops. I do the best gen research I can, but am always open to corrections. This is an original antique item, not a reprint. A new high quality rigid sleeve is included for extra protection, especially during shipping. You may buy a piece alone, or large intimate 300 dpi scans of the front and back sent immediately via email, or both. Please search carefully, as they are often found together and many may be related. I also invite you to join me at Ancestorville Genealogy on facebook. Thank you, enjoy! ~Debra Clifford (contact info on top bar)
