1860's Mrs. Moses signed CDV Photo, Portsmouth, Rockingham County NH
#200:
On reverse: "Ath: Mrs. Moses, Portsmouth, NH" is handwritten in pencil. We do not know what the Ath: stands for, do you? Photo type: Original Vintage Victorian Carte de visite CDV Photograph. Photographer: Davis Brothers, 17 Pleasant St, Portsmouth, Rockingham County, New Hampshire. (known to be photographer brothers Charles Davis & Lewis Davis)
This photograph was removed from a photo album found in the Northampton area of Massachusetts, Hampshire County. A very kind dealer / collector was finding and saving extensive family / genealogy material in the 1980-1990’s in that area. We have worked with her on hundreds of items. She bought at many MA auctions and flea markets, and carefully rewrote the family names as they were originally written on the decrepit album sleeves. Very often the early antique photo albums did not stand the test of time.
A wonderful historical Moses family of Portsmouth NH original photo. The Moses surname is very prevalent in that area. This is a vivid and exceptionally clear close up intimate portrait of her. Mrs. Moses in the photo would have been born between 1810-30, and appears about 45-55 years old. We feel the photo was taken in the late 1860's to early 1870's. She wears what appears to be Victorian mourning attire, deep black with all black embellishments. It's possible she lost a family member in the near year before.
