1860's Mary Ramage Claiborne CDV Photo, Nashville, Davidson County TN

This is a southern Civil War era CDV portrait of Mary Ramage Claiborne, a young teen era girl from Nashville, Tennessee. It was taken by a skilled photographer, and depicts Mary with hand to chin. It is a beautiful American photography piece. Mary died soon after this photo was taken. The photo is hand signed on the reverse in beautiful early period ink script as "Mary Ramage Claiborne, Born Jan'y 4, 1853, Died March 25, 1867." Photographer: C.C. Giers National Portrait Gallery 42 and 44 Union St. Nashville, Tennessee, Davidson County. (known to Nashville photographer Carl Giers, Carl C. Giers or Carl Casper Giers 1828-1877)

Found in Public Genealogy Records:
Her father: Henry Laurens Claiborne 1819–1898, died at age 79. He was born in Davidson, Davidson County, Tennessee, and died in Nashville, Davidson County, Tennessee. A plantation owner in the fire, brokerage and insurance business, he was also known as Henry Claiborne and H.L. Claiborne. His parents were Maj. Thomas B. Claiborne 1780–1856, and eminient lawyer and member of congress from Tennessee, and Sarah Martin King Lewis Claiborne 1786–1860. She was the daughter of Col. Joel Lewis, who was a Revolutionary War hero of the battle of King Mountain. (Joel Lewis 1760-1816, was the son of William Terrell Lewis and Sarah Martin Lewis of Albemarle, Virginia. His wife was Miriam Eastham Lewis and they had eighteen children. moving to Davidson County, Tennessee in 1789)

Her mother: Lucy Ann Steele Claiborne 1825-1894, who married Henry Claiborne in 1844 in Christian County, Kentucky. Lucy was the daughter of Dr. John Alexander Steele and Louisa Ann Thompson Steele.

Mary is listed in the 1860 Census in Nashville with her parents H.L. Claiborne, age 40, born in 1820 in Tennessee and her mother Lucy Claiborne, age 34, born in Kentucky in 1826. Her siblings in 1860 were:
Willie Claiborne, age 13
Mary Claiborne age 7 (herself, this photo is of Mary)
Lucy Claiborne, age 6.

Her father, Henry L. Claiborne worked at the Nashville and Northwestern Railroad Company and can be found in web searches. On the 1860 slave census Henry L. Claiborne was listed as owning three female slaves, ages 24, 14 and 6. This is a rare Confederate era slavery, slaves, African American Civil War related piece, as well as a historical Nashville piece. Note: There is a Claiborne County, Mississippi and a Claiborne County, Tennessee. This photo was found in Clinton, Mississippi, Hinds County.

We also found evidence of a Mary Claiborne Ramage 1815-1882, buried at the Mount Olivet Cemetery, Nashville, Davidson County, Tennessee. This is the same cemetery young Mary is buried at, and we assume she is named for this family member. A rare and beautiful piece. This is a DAR, Daughters of the American Revolution and SAR Sons of the American Revolutionary War family.
