Profession: Wood, Stone decorator Sculptor and relief artist who studied in Europe, was first employed at the Company Cuypers. He was commissioned by many, including Alexander Bleys. In 1884 he lived in New York City. On May 8, 1918, he lived in Philadelphia and he applied for a patent for molding decorative elements of interior walls, which was granted.

From The 1896 American Historical Register, Volume 4 from the Historical Register Publishing Company: "Professor Leonard H. de Fernelmont, the Belgian sculptor, is working on a statue of George Washington, representing him as a Masonic Grand Master, wearing the apron made for him by Madame Lafayette for freemasonry. It is to be placed in the new Masonic Temple at Detroit, Michigan. It will be of statuary marble, 6 feet 2 inches high, with a pedestal of 3 feet 6 inches."

He has executed statues for public buildings in Amsterdam and the Hague, and is equally at home in religious, historical and portrait-sculpture."

From the Book: "Distinguished successful Americans of our day; containing biographies of prominent Americans now living by Successful Americans (Chicago, Illinois) Published 1912": "Ernest August George Intemann: Merchant, Was born Eversen, Hanover, Germany, Oct. 25, 1848; seventh son of Claus Hinrich Intemann, a prosperous farmer; lost parents when quite young; came to the United States 1861; attended German school connected with St. Johannes church, New York City; married September, 1869, Catherine Margaretta Lange, eight children: Mary M., Carolina W., Ernest A.G., Jr., Charles L.H., Alfred C., Agnes H., Flora D., and Frederick W. Learned confectioners trade; established own business in 1869. Always active in interests of the confectionery trade and was instrumental in having law passed at Albany to permit opening of confectionery and similar stores on Sundays; since 1886, president United Confectioners Supply company; also president Confectioners Manufacturing company, manufacturers of Hygeia ice. Prominent Free Mason. Ex-president German branch Y.M.C.A. Residence: 27 Bank street."
Leonard H. de Fernelmont is about 50 years of age in this photo, which is a beautiful and close up intimate sepia portrait. He wears a large ornate vintage gold medal pin, with a crown, on his lapel. We have included a close up shot of this medal in scans. This photo was found in Hampden County MA. He is recorded as being both Dutch and Belgian in public records. A beautiful and rare portrait of an important artist.
