Josiah J Childs was born on February 3, 1833, in Steuben County, New York. His father was Nathaniel Childs and his mother was Elizabeth Childs. He had two sons with his wife Mary Coverdale Childs between 1865 and 1876. He died in 1903 at the age of 70 years.

In 1880 Josiah Childs lived in Columbia, Hamilton, Ohio. In 1900 his residence was Rome, Floyd County, Georgia, a widower, living with his son Robert Childs. He died in 1903 at age 70 and was buried in Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio.

Josiah looks like a hardy pioneer type. The photographer has hand tinted his eyes with a faded blue color tint. It was found in Ithaca, Tompkins County New York, close to Steuben County. A wonderful photo of a Civil war veteran.
