1860's Joshua Lawrence Underhill CDV Photo, NYC (son of JS Underhill)
On reverse: "Joshua Underhill" is handwritten lightly in old early period pencil by one hand, and then "Joshua Underhill" handwritten again later in ballpoint pen by another hand. Photo type: Original Antique Victorian CDV carte de visite Photograph, Civil war era, 1860's. Photographer: R.A. Lewis, 152 Chatham Street, New York, Kings and New York County. (known to be photographer Richard Lewis, Richard A. Lewis)
This is a beautiful photo of a very dapper 1860's man, about 20 years old. In Victorian terms, he would be known as a "dandy." He wears a silk bowtie, striped white linen vest, handkerchief, white linen trousers, most likely taken in summer. He is dressed much differently and exhibits more wealthy clothing than most of the 1860's CDV photos that we handle. His clothing and style convey wealth, esteem and very high Victorian fashion.
We believe him to be Joshua Lawrence, the son of Joshua Sutton Underhill 1796-1857 and Alice Lawrence Underhill 1805-1888. He was a wealthy NYC insurance aristocrat. Known as J.S. Underhill, he was the president of "The United States Fire Insurance Company of New York" from 1849 until his 1858, the year of his death. It was located at 46 Pine Street in New York City.
Sadly, his son Joshua Lawrence Underhill died while visiting Merton, France in 1872. In 1864, at the time of this photo, he had married Sarah Sutton of Westchester NY and they had 2 children before his untimely death. Sarah also died a few years after her young husband, in 1875. We do not know who raised the children. We feel this is his 1864 wedding era photo.
Note: The only other Joshua Underhill in NYC records at this time is Joshua B. Underhill and photos of his image can easily be found online. This is not him. Both are from early Quaker genealogy families.

This is a wonderful NYC Underhill family piece, and a beautiful fashion CDV. It was found in Kingston, Ulster County, New York, and is a sad look at a young life lost. We would love more info on his death in Menton, France and family, especially the Underhill children he and his wife left.
Size: 2.5 x 4 inches
Note: Hello from ~debra. I have spent years collecting over 10,000 ID’d lost family photos & paper from US flea markets & antique shops. I do the best gen research I can, but am always open to corrections. This is an original antique item, not a reprint. A new high quality rigid sleeve is included for extra protection, especially during shipping. You may buy a piece alone, or large intimate 300 dpi scans of the front and back sent immediately via email, or both. Please search carefully, as they are often found together and many may be related. I also invite you to join me at Ancestorville Genealogy on facebook. Thank you, enjoy! ~Debra Clifford (contact info on top bar)
