1860's John W. Roberts CDV Photo, Urbana, Champaign County, Ohio

#590:

On reverse: "John W. Roberts, Champaign Co. Ohio" is beautifully handwritten in old period script in fine pencil. Photo type: Original Vintage Victorian CDV carte de visite Photograph. Photographer: J. Coss, Main Street over State Bank, Springfield, Clark County, Ohio. (known to be Photographer John Coss 1822-1877, a daguerreian ambrotypist and CDV photographer born in Maryland. He worked in Springfield, Ohio, and was married to Dulcema Coss. He was a Civil War veteran in the Co. C 110th OH)

In August 1864 to August 1866, the US government taxed photographs to help pay for the American Civil war. Revenue stamps were placed on the back of photos, and “hand cancelled" by the photographer. CDV's with revenue stamps are collectible for stamp and vintage photography collectors. It is a way to date a Civil War era photograph. This CDV has a 3 cent revenue stamp.
