When John Sullivan Tilley was born in June 1852 in Grafton, New York, his father, John, was 45 and his mother, Abigail Tilley, was 37. (nee Abigail M. Jones, Abigail Jones)
He married Rose Emma Coons (also known as Rosa Coons in census) in 1871. She was born in Adams, Jefferson County, New York in 1851 to William Henry Coon and Rosetta Orcelia Coon. They had four children in 11 years. He died on March 25, 1913, in Loudonville, New York, at the age of 60.

Wife: Rose Coons Tilley, Rose Tilley.
Her Parents: William Coon, Rosetta Coon

Their Children:
Clarence Tilley (Clarence died as a teenager in 1890 in Troy)
Roxanna Elena Tilly (married Herman Brandon Gaffers)
Emma C Tilley (Emma died at age 21 in 1904)
Mabel F Tilley (married Jesse W Pitts, Jessie Pitts)

Please note: The town of "West Troy", across the Hudson River, is now know as Watervliet in Albany County. Troy is in Rensselaer County, New York. The old 19th c. town and county lines have changed. We also noticed the spelling of Tilley and Tilly in census records for this family, although gravestones are spelled Tilley.

From Tilley Ladder Company current website: "John Tilley (1806-1878) made barrels, and ladders as a side line, in the Rensselaer County town of Grafton, NY, before moving to the village of West Troy (now Watervliet) in 1855 to concentrate on manufacturing ladders and scaffolding. His son, John S. Tilley (1852-1913), took over the business in 1878." There is a photo there of an older John S. Tilley.

This family photo is slightly trimmed on edges, usually to fit into tight paper photo albums, as most were. Does not affect his actual image in any way. A beautiful piece.

Size: 2.5 x 4 inches
