This is an amazing and dashing Civil War era portrait of a young Bates family boy, who appears about 20 years old. He wears a stunning long wool coat, probably taken in winter. He holds a wool or felt hat in his hand, wearing a silk cravat bow tie, checkered vest and a heavy ring on his left finger. He is very self assured and fashionable. It was found upstate, in the Hudson Valley of New York in the Dutchess County area. This is a beautiful Victorian era photo of a very handsome and dashing young John Bates.
