1880's Herbert Maud CDV Photo, Devon, England by Walter Downes Bradnee
#754 Maud Genealogy
On reverse: "Herbert Maud" is boldy handwritten in pencil. Photo type: Original Vintage Victorian CDV carte de visite Photograph. Photographer: W. Bradnee, 8, Fleet Street, Torquay & Calabria, Newton Abbot, Devon, England, United Kingdom UK. (known to be photographer Walter Bradnee, Walter D. Bradnee, Walter Downes Bradnee 1817-1898)
This family photo is slightly trimmed on edges, usually to fit into tight CDV paper photo albums, as most were. Does not affect Herbert's actual image in any way.
The Maud or Maude family name is prevalent in Devon genealogy and history records, although we could not find Herbert Maud or Herbert Maude in 19th c. Torquay or Newton Abbott. It is possible he was visiting from another area when photo was taken. He appears born about 1830-40 and to be 40-50 years of age.
The Bradnee photographic process here is unique, as in the CDV photo is printed on what appears to be a very thin, glossy celluloid sheet, then glued onto the CDV paper board, which gives it a rather dreamy and ethereal look in our scan. A beautiful and clearly identified English Maud family photo. It was found in Exeter, Devon and taken by the famous photographer Walter Downes Bradnee, who moved his photography studio to Toronto, Canada, soon after this photo was taken.
Size: 2.5 x 4 inches
Note: Hello from ~debra. I have spent years collecting over 10,000 ID’d lost family photos & paper from US UK flea markets & antique shops. I do the best gen research I can, but am always open to corrections. This is an original antique item, not a reprint. A new high quality rigid sleeve is included for extra protection, especially during shipping. You may buy a piece alone, or large intimate 300 dpi scans of the front and back sent immediately via email, or both. Please search carefully, as they are often found together and many may be related. I also invite you to join me at Ancestorville Genealogy on facebook. Thank you, enjoy! ~Debra Clifford (contact info on top bar)
