1858 Frederic A. Knight, 4 years old, Antique Victorian Coffin Plate
#495 Knight Genealogy:
A sad and beautiful early Vintage Victorian mourning coffin plate for a young boy named Frederic A. Knight who passed away in 1858, at age 4 years and 2 months. This beautiful hand scribed pate would have been removed from his coffin, a beautiful old mourning piece. It was found in Brimfield, Hampden County, Massachusetts.
There is a good chance his young life was as a New Englander, but that is not an absolute. It should be noted that New England was the place where the practice of keeping the coffin plates of a deceased loved one began, as an American mourning custom.
1858 Vintage Victorian Metal Engraved Funeral Coffin Plate reads:
Frederic A. Knight
Died Sept. 11, 1858
4 years, 2 months
Sadly, young Fred Knight may have never made it into census records, but more good genealogy work could be done to find him, with such specific birth and death clues. He would be born in July, 1854. It would be possible he made it into the 1855 US census, although he could not be found by us. A beautiful Knight family plate on thick high quality silver plated metal with a repeating scalloped flower border. It is absolutely hand engraved in beautiful old font script by a skilled craftsman. RIP to Frederic.
