Rockland County Journal Newspspaper, 4 June 1887, entitled A WEDDING IN NYACK: "A fashionable wedding occurred in Grace Church, Nyack, on Wednesday afternoon, at 1 o'clock. The happy contracting parties were Miss Florence Merritt, of this place, and Mr. Francis B. Aspinwall, of New York. A large number of guests were present to witness the joyous event, many of them being from New York and Brooklyn. Miss Merritt was prettily attired in white silk, with tulle veil and duchesse lace, and carried a beautiful bridal bouquet of white roses. The bridesmaids were two sisters of the bride, Miss Eliza Aspinwall, Miss Whittemore, Miss Bianohi and Miss Emily Hicks, all of whom were prettily dressed. The best man was Mr. Lawrence Aspinwall. The ushers were Messrs. J.B. Simonson, Frank Bianohi, Alexander Hadden, William Andrews, Richard Haines and D. Allen. The ushers were attired in black cutaway coats and gray trousers, and wore tan-oolored gloves. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. Franklin Babbitt, rector of Grace Church, and the bridal couple left this place by an afternoon train on a wedding trip. We extend our hearty congratulations."
Book: THE OLD MERCHANTS OF NEW YORK CITY, Second Series, By Walter Barrett, Clerk, 1863 by Joseph Alfred Scoville, 1815-1864, Published 1870, FROM MERCHANT DESCRIPTIONS, CHAPTER 33: "James Scott Aspinwall, son of Gilbert (John, Joseph, Peter) and Ann Sowers Aspinwall, was born in New York City, October 19, 1807, and died there April, 1874. In 1830, he engaged in the wholesale drug business with William L. Rushton, under the firm name of Rushton & Aspinwall. Subsequently he carried on business alone for many years. He married, June 6, 1843, Margaret, daughter of Robert and Ann Maxwell of Dumfries, Scotland. She died July 26, 1881."
Eliza never married and is buried in South End Cemetery, East Hampton, Suffolk County NY. The photo was found in Kent, South East England, which is not surprising, as she applied for many passport applications to England in her lifetime, seen in in public records. She was a NYC artist & decorator in census records.
John Aspinwall 1774-1847 was the Great Grandfather of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. His wife was Susan Howland Aspinwall 1779-1852. They are buried at Greenwood Cemetery in Brooklyn. This is a beautifully signed photograph of a young Aspinwall ancestor, from a very important American family.
