On reverse: "Eli Burhouse, Care of Hugh Whitely, 113 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia, PA" is handwritten in fine old period dip pen ink. Photo type: 1860's Vintage Victorian CDV Carte de Visite Photograph. Photographer: C. Evans, Photographer, No. 1520 Market Street, Philadelphia, Philadelphia County. (known to be photographer Charles Evans, who worked in Philadelphia from 1848 into the Civil War era 1860's)

Note: In August 1864 to August 1866, the US government taxed photographs to help pay for the American Civil war. Revenue stamps were placed on the back of photos, and “hand cancelled" by the photographer. This CDV has a revenue stamp that was hand cancelled by Charles Evans, and has "C.E. 1864" handwritten in dip pen ink on the revenue stamp. There is another word next to the stamp written we believe by Charles Evans, may be an abbreviation for the word "developed' and may be his own photographers note.

Interestingly, we found reference to Hugh Whitely of Philadelphia also here:
Book: "History of the Minnesota Valley" by Rev. Edward D. Neill, 1882, pages 986-990, Chapter XCV: Traverse County, Village of Browns Valley: "The government surveys were made in 1870, and in 1871 and 1872 permanent settlement commenced all along the lake. The first colony of white settlers located on Lake Traverse in what is now Windsor township, September, 1871. It consisted of Hugh Whitely, George Schiefly and James D. Finley, with their wives and children. They all came from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Mr. Whitely built the first frame house in the county. At first they suffered many privations; at times they almost starved. The Indians were friendly to them without exception. The Bailey family, from Tennessee, settled in 1867, on Lake Traverse. From there they moved to Big Stone, and thence to the meadow land south of the valley. Lon, Thomas and Frank trapped it for years. To establish an election precinct and execute local duties, Governor 0.K. Davis, in 1874, appointed S.J. Brown, county commissioner. The next year the governor added Hugh Whiteley and M.I. Matthews."

A beautiful old signed English immigrant to America photo. It is assumed Eli sent this photo home to his English family, with his address where he could be reached as it is handwritten on the reverse. Is it possible Eli worked for Dry Goods merchant Hugh Whitely? More research needed.

The Burhouse name is also seen in genealogy census records spelled as Borhouse, Burroughs, Buroughs, and Bushouse.  Eli's 1880 PA death certificate lists him as Eli Beerhouse. This is a wonderful signed full body portrait piece. Eli has pink hand tinted cheeks, before the advent of color photography. It was found in Gloucestershire, England, Great Britain, United Kingdom.
