1878 Edwin Erin Burke Cashin CDV Photo of Springfield, Massachusetts
#446:
On reverse: "Ed Cashin" is handwritten in pencil on reverse. Photo Type: Original Victorian CDV Carte de Visite Photograph, dated 1878. Photographer: H. Buchholz, Springfield, Hampden County, Massachusetts. (known to be photographer Herman Buchholz)
An unusual CDV photo in that his mother's body is hidden and draped in a large piece of fabric, holding the childs body, to the right. This is known as a "hidden mother" studio photo. The baby's mother would be draped behind holding the baby up for the long 30 second or more exposure in the photographer's studio, quite a feat!

SPRINGFIELD CITY DIRECTORY AND BUSINESS ADVERTISER, COMBINED WITH DIRECTORIES OF NEW WEST SPRINGFIELD, CHICOPEE AND CHICOPEE FALLS For the Year commencing July 1st, 1878, PUBLISHED BY THE CLARK W. BRYAN CO. Publishers, Printers, Bookbinders and Stationers 1878:
Mrs. William Cashin, Milliner, 365 Main Street, House 374 Main Street. (A milliner is a hat maker)
In the Victorian era, boys wore frocks with pleated skirts, or tunics and blouses over pleated skirts, until the age of three or five. Often you will also see a tartan sash. A portrait of the Prince of Wales in a Scottish kilt in 1849 gave rise to this vogue for boys.
This photo was found in Northampton, Massachusetts, Hampshire County. It is a beautiful old dated 1878 photo, which lines of perfectly to the exact year of Edwin Cashin's birth. He was a dook binder in massachusetts and in Rhode Island, married to Olivine Cashin, French Canadian, who was a milliner, according to census records. A beautiful and rare photo. We have also seen evidence of this unusual surname as McCashin and also as a derivative of Cushing.
