On reverse: "Yours muchly, Dan F. Cowles" handwritten in old period pencil script. Photo type: CDV Carte de visite Photo. Photographer: Crandell & Conkey, Glens Falls, NY, Warren County. (known to be Isaac Crandell & George W. Conkey)

A beautiful Civil War era civilian image of Dan Cowles, born about 1830-40. In 1864-66 the US government taxed photography to help pay for the American Civil war. Revenue stamps were placed on the back of photos, and "cancelled" by the photographer. CDV's with revenue stamps are collectible in their own right for stamp collectors and vintage photography collectors. It is a wonderful way to date a Civil War era photograph. This CDV has a revenue stamp.
