1870's Charles Clifford Heisley CDV Photo, 28th PA, Civil War Musician

#577 Charles Heisley, CC Heisley, Charles C. Heisley:

On reverse: "C.C. Heisley" is handwritten in old period pencil script. Photo Type: CDV Carte de Visite Photograph. Photographer: marked "Specialite" by Lee & Cowgill, Main Street, Mount Holly, Burlington County, New Jersey (known to be the partnership of 2 photographers Henry Cowgill or Henry M. Cowgill & Benjamin Lee or Benjamin F. Lee. Lee is also listed as a Daguerreotypist)

This photo is of a young Victorian gentleman with lightly hand tinted cheeks. It is is slightly trimmed on edges to fit into a 19th c. photo album. He appears to be in his early twenties. We found evidence that Charles C. Heisley as a young boy, age 12, enlisted as a musician in the 28th PA regiment during the Civil War. His father was the Chaplin of this famous regiment, which saw extensive duty at Gettysburg.

This family photo is slightly trimmed on bottom edge, usually to fit into the tight paper Victorian photo albums, as they were. It does not affect his actual image in any way.

A beautiful old identified CDV photo of a well known Pennsylvania and New Jersey family with deep Civil War roots. Heisly is an alternative spelling of this surname. A handsome and stylish Victorian man. Was Charles Heisley Jr. a young Civil War drummer boy in the 28th PA with his father? He would have been 12 years old during his 1861-1862 service.
