#575:
On reverse: "Mrs. Ann Johnson, Mrs. James M. Johnson, Ann Taintor, Windham, Conn." is all handwritten in ballpoint pen by the same shaky hand. Photo Type: Original Vintage Victorian CDV Carte de Visite, 1864-66, Civil War era. Photographer: A. Cobden, Troy, Albany County and Rensselaer County, New York. (known to be photographer Arthur Cobden 1833-1878, born in London in 1833 and died in Utica, New York. He originally worked in NYC as an ambrotypist in the early years, and later as a CDV photographer)
Note: In 1864-66 the US government taxed photography to help pay for the American Civil war. Revenue stamps were placed on the back of photos, and "cancelled" by the photographer. CDV's with revenue stamps are collectible in their own right for stamp collectors and vintage photography collectors. It is a wonderful way to date a Civil War era photograph. This CDV has a revenue stamp cancelled with a rubber stamp by Arthur Cobden, the photographer
This photo was found in New York in Schenectady County. It is a beautiful piece of Civil War era portrait photography. Ann wears amazing ringlets in her hair. Troy, New York was a bustling and very successful high Victorian town in the 19th century.
