1870's Ann Martin Linn CDV Photo, Cedar Rapids, Linn County, Iowa
#196 Linn Genealogy:
On front: "Ann (Mrtin) Linn" is handwritten in rather crude ink under her image, see signature scan. It may have been written by a child. (It is also possible that it reads "Anny (Mrtin) Linn" or is meant to be "Ann Martin Linn") Photo type: Original Antique Victorian Carte de visite CDV Photograph. Photographer: Ed. L. Swem's Art Gallery, opposite the American, Cedar Rapids, Linn County, Iowa. (known to be photographer Edward Lawrence Swem 1838-1918 or E.L. Swem, earlier of Swem & Newton Gallery in Belle Plaine, Iowa and later of the Swem Cottage Gallery, and Swem's Studio. He was born in Dublin, Wayne County, Indiana. His father Ezra Swem or E.B. Swem 1815-1871 is listed as a minister in 1850 census, a Quaker family. His mother was Phebe Gregg 1819–1887, daughter of Doctor Eli Gregg 1794–1852, a well known Quaker. He was a Civil War veteran of Co. A 14th Iowa Infantry, Co. K 7th Iowa Cavalry, Co. C 41st Iowa Infantry and a 2nd Lieutenant of the 59th USCI United States Colored Infantry. He was the father of Dr. Earl Gregg Swem 1870-1965, a historian, and librarian at the Library of Congress and Virginia State Library, and from 1920-1944 the librarian at the College of William & Mary, where the Earl Gregg Swem Library is named in his honor. He is also seen as Edmund L. Swem in early census records)
This family photo is slightly trimmed on edges, usually to fit into photo albums, as many were. Does not affect her image in any way. Do you know this beautiful girl? She appears to be about 20 years of age, and born in the 1850-60 range. Was her name Anny, Annie, Anna or Ann Martin Linn? There are many Sweden, Swedish immigrants in the area then with surname Linn and LIndt.
It is also possible she is Czech, Czechoslovakian with name "Anny" and spelling as "Mrtin." Cedar Rapids had a large CZ population then. The photo was found in Rochester, Monroe County, New York. Note: Linn County, Iowa is named in honor of Senator Lewis Fields Linn 1796-1843 of Missouri. Any help or correction is appreciated, email Debra here.
