1902 Mrs. Titterington's Edwardian English Staffordshire Teapot

A wonderful old chunky and heavy English pottery stoneware presentation teapot adorned with pottery sprigged flowers and ornamentation. It is boldly ID'd in scribed black lettering with the name "Mrs. Titterington, ER 1902." This piece was most likely made in honour of Mrs. Titterington's 1902 marriage. We were told these named English teapots were often made for special occasions in the Staffordshire, Derbyshire, England area. It is unmarked. They are related in presentation (but not in appearance) to the brown glazed Measham "Bargeware" teapots, also with family names, that were sold in Measham as presentation pieces for births, anniversaries and especially marriages. They were very popular with bargee or bargeman's wives, thus the name. Measham is in Leicestershire close to the borders of Derbyshire, the Staffordshire pottery district and Warwickshire.
The ER on the teapot refers to Edward Rex, and celebrates the new reign of Edward VII, Albert Edward 1841-1910, crowned King of the United Kingdom and the British Dominions and Emperor of India on 22 January 1901. He was the eldest son of Queen Victoria 1819-1901 and Prince Albert 1819-1961. The beloved Queen died in 1901 after having reigned for over 63 years.

This Edwardian teapot condition is beautiful, as always these old stoneware pots have minor firing, glazing and discolouration marks in the making. There is black pottery silk or soot in the white sprig ware, which we believe adds to the charm. We are impressed with the condition overall and especially the spout. It was lovingly taken care of in a family for years and found in Newton Abbot, Devon, England. Click images to see condition in close up and movable views.
