Age: dated 1883
Condition: on board, orange cardstock, with early typography, trimmed on right edge as seen in photos, a rare and wonderful original American dentist piece, would be wonderful framed. Has 2 holes for hanging in general store window, see close up photos.

This is a rare and wonderful one of a kind advertising placard poster meant to hung in a general store or town hall area announcing a traveling dentist named F. A. Gaudett. F.A. traveled around the northern Adirondack region of New York State and saw patients in various NY towns.

Text on poster reads:  1883 Dentistry: Dr. F.A. Gaudett will visit the places usually visited by him during the year, and remain during the time specified below:

Found in Public Genealogy Records: We found a bio on F.A. Gaudette online stating he was was born at Ottawa, Canada on  March 26, 1842, and came to America in 1860, to Watertown, New York. He was educated in Ottawa and Watertown. He first worked with Dr. Lansing and then entered the office of Dr. J.T. Huntingdon, graduating from the Chicago College of Dental Surgery in 1893, and in 1895 graduated from Dr. Northrup's school of 510 Fifth avenue, which school was also for practitioners. In 1869 he came to Redwood, having offices at various points in both St. Lawrence and Jefferson counties. In 1871 he married Mary, daughter of William Casay and they have one son and one daughter, William and Mattie. Mr. Gaudett is one of the progressive men of his profession, taking an active interest in educational and religious institutions. In the 1900 census, we found the Gaudett family living in Alexandria, NY. They had a daughter Martha Kasey. (Bio above lists her as Martha Casay) Frederic is 57 years old, his wife Mary is 56. His parents were French, born in France and Ireland, hers both in Ireland. 

Newspaper article: Watertown Daily Times Saturday Afternoon - October 8, 1910 "Dr. F. A. Gaudett Passes Away Suddenly, Aged 68 Redwood NY, Oct. 8 - The funeral of Dr. Frederick A. Gaudett, a well known dentist of this village, who died suddenly Thursday morning, will be held from his late home Sunday at 2 p.m. The Watertown Commandery, Knights Templar will act as an escort, and the Masonic lodge of Alezandria Bay will have charge of the funeral. Dr. Gaudett was born in Canada 68 years ago. When a young boy he went to Watertown where he worked for a time. About 40 years ago he established a dentist office in this village, being the first dentist here. He had practiced his profession since that time, having branch offices in various towns about here where he visited. He was married about 35 years ago to Mrs. Mary Casey of Theresa. Mrs. Gaudett died suddenly last January. Dr. Gaudett was a man of sterling character and genial personality and leaves a large number of friends who regret the passing of a man whose honor was never doubted." 

A great old piece...one of a kind, probably the only copy in existence. early antique dentistry posters are collectible and rare, and this is a beautiful old graphic piece. The alternative surname spellings are Gaudet, Gaudette, and Gaudett. There are no scans available of this early advertising sign.
