On reverse: "Curtis Field, California" beautifully is handwritten in old period pencil. Photo type: Victorian CDV carte de visite Photograph. Photographer: C. Allen's Photograph Rooms, West Side, Central Square, Keene, Cheshire County, New Hampshire NH. (known to be photographer Chester Allen 1816-1881 born in Rindge, Cheshire County, New Hampshire, to Salmon Allen (or Solomon Allen) 1786–1870 and Sophia Sawtell Allen 1790–1865 buried in Woodland Cemetery in Keene NH where he died at age 65. He was first married to Hannah Damon Allen 1818–1860. They had 5 known children. His second wife was Harriett J. Brown Allen 1831–1883, known as Hattie Allen)

Found in Public Genealogy Records:
We found Sophronia Allen Field born in 1804 in Charlestown, Sullivan, New Hampshire to Nathan Allen 1768–1833 and Deborah Farwell Allen 1765–1851. She later lived in the Keene NH area. This photographer is named Chester Allen, was he her relative? She had a son named James Curtis Field born in 1843. Her husband was Bethuel Field, born in 1801. The family appears to have gone west from New Hampshire to Iowa, Kansas and Bethuel died in Flint, Genesee County, Michigan. We feel this is her son James Curtis Field, who appears to have gone west to California.

This is a beautiful image of James or Curtis Field at about 16-20, taken during the early 1860-65 Civil War era in Keene, NH. Was he headed out west from New England to explore California? We think so. The handwriting on the reverse is beautifully rendered. He has a curly head of hair, long coat, black silk cravat at neck and appears about 15 years of age.
