1870's Stephen Merritt CDV Photo, 19th c. Undertaker, New York City

On reverse: "Merritt, Undertaker in New York" is handwritten in pencil on reverse. Photo type: Original vintage Victorian CDV or Carte de Visite Photograph, circa 1870's. Photographer: Juliette P. Nexsen, Artiste, No. 37 Union Square, West Side, Rooms 9 & 11, New York, New York County. (Note: Juliette Nexsen was a 19th c. woman photographer in NYC, an unusual occupation for a woman then)

This family photo is slightly trimmed on edges, usually to fit into tight paper photo albums, as most were. Does not affect his actual image in any way.

Found in Public Genealogy Records:
This Merritt family gentleman wears a black silk vest and white silk cravat tie, in his late sixties in age. The photo is somewhat light in tone, but his face can be seen well.

We found evidence of Stephen Merritt, listed as an undertaker (and a minister in earlier records) in the 1870 census. He was married to Phoebe Merritt, both born around 1800. Phoebe was born in New Jersey and he in New York. A relative, Catharine Merritt, age 67 was also living with them, as well as a young (probably apprentice) undertaker named Alfred Holland. Census records list his residence as New York Ward 16, District 5, 2nd Enumeration District, New York City, New York.

His son was a well known New Yorker named Stephen J. Merritt, a NYC clergyman and undertaker to celebrities and Manhattans upper class. He was famous for being the undertaker to Ullysses S. Grant. We feel this is likely a photo of his father. It is a rare and beautiful piece, found in Granby, Hartford County, Connecticut.
