In 1864-66 the US government taxed photography to help pay for the American Civil war. Revenue stamps were placed on the back of photos, and "cancelled" by the photographer. CDV's with revenue stamps are collectible in their own right for stamp collectors and vintage photography collectors. It is a wonderful way to date a Civil War era photograph. This CDV has a green 2 cent revenue stamp, hand cancelled with a small rubber stamp with the initials of David O. Furnald Photographer: DOF and the month: MAY.

It was found in Greenwich, Fairfield County, Connectucut. A stunningly clear and crisp close up Stearns family Civil War era portrait.

Size: 2.5 x 4 inches
