1860's Rev. Dr. Maxon Civil War era CDV Photo by Jeremiah Gurney NYC

On reverse: "Reverend D. Maxon" is handwritten in old period pencil script. Photo Type: Original Vintage Victorian CDV Carte de Visite Photograph, circa 1860’s, Civil War era. Photographer: J. Gurney & Son, 707 Broadway, New York City, Manhattan, New York County. (known to be photographer Jeremiah Gurney 1812-1895 first a daguerreotype photographer operating in New York City, and later became a leading portrait photographer. He took many famous photos of prominent 19th c. citizens relating to the American Civil War, including performers, actors, politicians, clergy and 19th century cultural icons. He is best known for having taken the only known photograph of Abraham Lincoln in death.)

This photo is slightly trimmed on edges, usually to fit into the tight paper Victorian photo albums, as they were. It does not affect his actual image in any way.

This is a beautifully signed old Civil War portrait of a Doctor of Divinity D.D., Minister, Preacher, Reverend or Deacon and Maxson is an alternative spelling of this surname. It was found in Kingston, Ulster County, New York about 2 hours north of New York City. Rev. Maxon was a prominent New York City member of the Clergy.

Size: 2.5 x 4 inches
