1860's Walsh CDV Photo, photographer A.E. Alden, Providence Arcade RI

On reverse: "Mrs. Walsh" is handwritten in pencil on reverse. Photo Type: Original Antique Victorian CDV Carte de Visite Photograph, circa 1860's Civil war era. Civil War era. Photographer: A.E. Alden, 59, 61, 63, & 65 Arcade, Providence, Providence and Bristol County, Rhode Island. (known to be famous New England photographer Augustus Ephraim Alden 1837-1880, with galleries in Troy, Rensselaer County, NY; Saratoga Springs NY; Springfield, Hampden County; Boston, Essex County; and Wakefield, Middlesex County, Massachusetts)

This beautiful photo has an ornate photographer's full backmark featuring an architectural image of "The Arcade" in Providence, RI. This impressive early building was America's first indoor enclosed shopping center. It was built in 1828 by Cyrus Butler and designed by American architects Russell Warren 1783–1860 of Providence, who was immersed in the Greek Revival style, and James C. Bucklin 1801-1890 also of Providence, who was considered an esteemed designer in mid 19th c. century architecture.

                                                    The Arcade in the 1850's

Rhode Island photographer A.E. Alden had 4 studio rooms there, with natural skylights for taking his early photographs. Wonderfully the building still stands, and is deemed a National Historic Landmark.

The photo is trimmed on bottom edge, to fit into photo albums. Mrs. Walsh of Providence wears a distinct smile, unusual for 1860's photography. She is about 50 years of age, a beautiful Walsh family piece, as well as a collectible for those interested in early historial photographer's advertising backmarks. A wonderful look at early American architecture on an early CDV, and a great Civil War era backmark.
