1860's Leroy Monroe CDV Photo, Sing Sing, Westchester County, New York


On reverse: "Leroy Monroe" is handwritten in old black ink. Photo type: Original Antique Victorian CDV or Carte de Visite Photograph, circa 1860's, Civil War era. Photographer: C.C. Sherwood, Photographist, Sing Sing, Westchester County, New York. (known to be photographer Christopher Columbus Sherwood 1828-1901, who also worked as a jeweler. He is found as a photographer in Peekskill, Ossining, and Cortlandt, Westchester County, New York and died in NYC)

Today, the village of Sing Sing is known as Ossining NY, and is the site of the famous Sing Sing prison. In 1685, Frederick Philipse purchased the land from the Sint Sinck Indians, and it became known as Sing Sing, derived from the Native American name.

LeRoy Monroe born 1859, listed as a tailor in the 1880 census records at age 21.
Father: Alanson Monroe 1822-1896 in NY, a shoemaker, also seen as Alanson T. Monroe, a Civil War veteran of Co. 1, 6th CT Connecticut Volunteers.
Mother: Hannah B. Jones Monroe born 1835 in NY to Alexander Jones 1805–1893 and
Phebe ST. John Jones 1813–1884 (Phoebe Jones) of Pound Ridge, Westchester County, New York.

His parents are buried the Sellecks Corner Cemetery, New Canaan, Fairfield County, Connecticut. This is a beautiful image of a young boy in a Civil War era child's frock coat, standing by a table with a photo album nearby. Leroy appears to be about 4 years of age, born 1859. He wears beautifully handmade clothing, with a woolen frock coat and full wool pants. He stands next to a short table with a book upon it. He appears much loved and cared for, a beautiful portrait. This photo was found in Granby, Hartford County, Connecticut.
