wiki says: "The word lady is a civil term of respect for a woman, specifically the female equivalent to gentleman, and also an English-language formal title. "Lady" is used before the surname of a woman with a title of nobility or honorary title suo jure, or the wife of a lord, a baronet, and a knight, and also before the first name of the daughter of a Duke, Marquess, or Earl."

A beautiful early ancestor piece of early English gentility. Mary Fortescue was born about 1793. This beautiful old photo was found in Exeter, Devon, England. It is a beautiful Victorian CDV photo that has the appearance of a fine painting of Lady Mary. We believe this to be a copy of a painting or earlier daguerreotype, which was then later produced as a CDV photo in the 1860's, a common practice at the time. Clovelly is 20 miles from Barnstaple of North Devon, England, and possibly the oldest borough in the United Kingdom.
