1877 CDV Photo by John Godeus, San Francisco CA Photographer, Backmark
This 1877 CDV photo has a beautiful and an ornate Victorian advertising backmark with a great line drawing portrait image of John Godeus, photographer. He owned the People's Art Gallery, 34 Third Street, San Francisco, California. He has a moustache, goatee, and ornate and patriotic eagle over his vignette.
On reverse: "For Minnie from Aunt Helen" is handwritten in beautiful old dip pen ink script. We do not know the identity of the woman in the photo, but think its pretty darn grand to have an early San Fran photographers own patriotic portrait printed on his backmark! Photo type: Original Vintage Victorian CDV or Carte de Visite Photograph, dated 1877. San Francisco is in San Mateo & San Francisco County. It was found in Norristown, Pennsylvania, Chester County.
John D. Godeus was a prolific and admired San Francisco Dutch photographer. In 1864, Godeus' 19 year old Irish born wife Mary Jane Godeus was killed aboard the famous steamboat boiler explosion of the "Washoe," which was sailing from Sacramento to San Francisco. John Godeus remarried in 1865 and both he and his new wife, Mary, were portrait photographers. He had Dutch, Holland roots.
Women's history, 19th century Women Photographer: John Godeus's new wife, Mary Anna Clifton Godeus, was also a photographer who worked with her husband starting in 1866, and later with their daughter Mary Clara Godeus. They also worked on after his 1895 death. Godeus has a street named after him in San Francisco. This photo was taken pre 1906 San Francisco earthquake by 29 years.
It is very rare to see a portrait of a photographer on a CDV advertising backmark.
