1860's Henry Graves CDV Photo, husband of Hattie, Ohio, Indiana


On reverse: "Mr. Henry Graves, Mt. Vernon, Ind." beautifully handwritten finely in old dip pen ink. Photo type: Vintage Victorian Carte de visite CDV Photograph. Photographer: Winder & Co's Gem Gallery, 160 Fifth Street between Race & Elm, Cincinnati, Clermont County, Ohio. Note: Mount Vernon, Indiana is in Wabash or Posey County. (known to be photographer John Winder or John W. Winder and William Winder, who was also known as W.W. Winder. They were early daguerreian artists working in Cincinnati, with John having worked steadily from 1855-1876, right into the CDV photo era) 

Found in Public Genealogy Records:
In 1850 census there is a Henry Graves with wife Harriet Graves living in Hamilton County, Illinois. They live with Anson Graves and Areneth Graves. All the Graves are born in New Hampshire, but Harriet is born Ohio. Henry and Harriet are also listed as living in McCleansboro, Hamilton County, Illinois.

Henry was a carpenter. The 1860 census has Henry & Harriett Graves living with daughter Annie Graves, age 9, in Mt. Vernon, Posey County, Indiana. They also lived in Black Turnpike in Posey County, Indiana. The 1870 Census has Henry & Harriett in Normal, Grant County, IN.

Note: Mt. Vernon, IN is a river town on the Wabash River. Cincinnati is a river town on the Ohio. It is possible due to migration, that relatives may have lived on both rivers. A beautiful old CDV image of a handsome man in his forties, and his wife Hattie's photo, with same handwriting on reverse. This is a Civil war era photo.
