1860's Reward of Merit: Flora J. Blodgett from teacher A.L. Williams

Handwritten on card: "To Flora J. Blodgett, From A.L. Williams" and "June 1st" is handwritten on the back in in fine early period pencil script. The printed verse reads: "How lovely, how charming the sight, When children their teacher obey! The angels look down with delight, This beautiful scene to survey."

We believe Flora's mother, Jane Blodgett, died of consumption 3 years afer she was born at age 33, thus she is not in the 1870 census above. Josiah W. Blodgett was born about 1834, in Westford, Massachusetts, the child of Jacob and Elmira Blodgett. He married Jane Blood on March 3, 1862, in North Chelmsford, Massachusetts. Jane Blood was born on August 22, 1833, in Groton, Massachusetts, and she married Josiah W. Blodgett on March 3, 1862, in North Chelmsford, Massachusetts. She died on November 22, 1866 in Westford, Massachusetts, at the age of 33 from "consumption."

Flora Jane Blodgett Gould was born on May 19, 1862, in Massachusetts. She married Horace A. Gould (Horace Gould) on April 2, 1882, in Westford, Massachusetts. They had one child during their marriage named Edwin H Gould. She had one brother Arthur Blood Blodgett, who died when Flora was 14 years old.

This beautiful Civil War era 1860's hand colored or hand tinted card was found in the New England area near Brimfield, Massachusetts. It is printed on an early coated stock, and is in beautiful condition. AL Williams is most likely a Westford MA teacher's name.  A beautiful old antique paper piece.
