1870's Dr. James McCosh CDV Photo, President Princeton University NJ

#052:

On reverse: "James McCosh (1811-1898) Scottish Clergyman, Photographer and President of Princeton. Dr. McCosh appears in D.O. Hill's 'Deed of Demission" is handwritten in pencil, probably in the 20th century, as well as "McCosh" which appears to be written earlier in pencil, possibly in the period. Photo Type: Original Vintage Victorian CDV Carte de Visite Photograph, circa 1870's. Photographer: Pach, 841 Broadway, Cor. 19th St, Opposite Wallack's Theatre, Kings County, New York City. (The Pach Bros. were founder Gustavus Pach 1848–1904 and his brothers Gotthelf Pach 1852–1925, Oscar Pach 1849-1903, Morris Pach 1837–1914 and Godfrey Pach, born 1852)

Found in Research & Public Genealogy Records:
Dr. James McCosh 1811-1894 was the 11th President of Princeton for 20 years, from 1868-1888. Born in Ayrshire, Scotland, he was a philosopher of the Scottish School of Common Sense. He attended the University of Glasgow in 1825, and University of Edinburgh in 1829 and was ordained a minister in 1834. McCosh was a professor of logic and moral philosophy at Queens College, Belfast, Ireland, before coming to America in 1866. He married Isabella Guthrie McCosh in 1845, daughter of the well known physician Alexander Guthrie, and was 78 years old when he resigned as president of Princeton.

Note: The reference to D.O. Hill refers to artist David Octavius Hill 1802-1870, a Scottish painter and early photography arts activist who painted a large historical painting of the signing of the Deed of Demission with important Scottish portraits, one presumably of Dr. McCosh.

This is a beautiful old close up portrait. This Scottish surname is seen as McCosh, McCash, and finally Cash in genealogy records. The photo was found in Hampden County, Massachusetts, and is a beautiful American CDV photo of an amazing man and scholar.
