1870's Maude Norwood Photo, wife Sumner Tingley Packard, Camden, Maine

#1080

On reverse: "Maude E. Norwood" is handwritten in old period pencil script. Photo type: CDV Carte de Visite Photograph, Victorian. Photographer: H.A. Mills, Camden, Knox County, Maine. (known to be photographer Hanson Albert Mills 1829-1916 born in Vinalhaven, Knox, Maine and died in Lincolnville, Waldo County, Maine at age 87, also known as Hanson A. Mills, he worked at 32 Main north of the bridge in Camden, starting around 1868 in Camden business directories)

Maude is a beautiful toddler and her mother is hidden under a lace shawl, holding her up to left, as we often see in these photos. This is called a "hidden mother" studio photo. The baby's mother would be draped behind holding the baby up for the long 30 second or more exposure in the photographer's studio, quite a feat!

Their children were:
1. Sumner T Packard Jr. 1904–1959 born in Brockton, Plymouth, Mass and died in Los Angeles, California. His wife is listed first as Ruth B. Packard and later in life in 1937 he married Antonia Sutkovoy Packard 1911–2004. He was a Chief Petty Officer in the US Navy.
2. Elinor Packard 1905–1905, died as an infant
3. Pauline Packard born 1912, found in 1920 census age 8 with family, unknown.

In the later years of her life as a widow she lived in Springfield, Hampden County, Massachusetts. Sumner died in 1936 and she can be seen living there in 1940, age 62. This photo was found down the road from Springfield, in Brimfield, Hampden, Mass. Did she have family in that area? It is slightly trimmed on bottom, usually to fit into the tight Victorian paper photo album sleeves. It does not affect her actual image in any way.

A beautiful baby photo of young Maude, a much loved curly haired baby in beautiful handmade clothing. This is an important DAR, Daughters of the American Revolution and SAR Sons of the American Revolutionary War family.
