1870 Lydia Bennett CDV Photo, sister to John Varney, Alton Belknap, NH

On front: handwritten in old period fountain pen is "Aunt Lydy". On reverse in same hand is: "Mrs. Lydia Bennett, Sister to Mother's Grandfather, John Varney" and more wonderful handwriting with great info, please see below. Photo type: Victorian CDV carte de visite Photograph. Photographer: WGC Kimball, State Block, Concord, Merrimack County, New Hampshire. (known to be photographer Willis Gaylord Clark Kimball 1843-1916, a Civil War Lieutenant Colonel of the 18th Regt. N.H. Volunteers and a member of a famous Kimball family of photographers in this area)

This 1870's photo has more old handwriting on reverse, in the same hand as above, a wonderful bit of historical info:  "She gave me my worls basket, doughnut kettle, ear rings made of beads & from Indians, Tongs, & Silk Quilt, all old."

Note: A whorl basket would hold whorls, which are tiny flywheel spindles for regulating the speed of a spinning wheel.

Found in public genealogy searches by researcher Gail at Ancestorville Genealogy: There's a Lydia Jane Varney who married a Daniel R Bennett in Alton, NH on 12 November 1840. Alton is only 30 miles away from Concord in Belknap County, New Hampshire. Her husband died in 1868. There is a John Varney living in Alton in the 1870 census who might possibly be the brother mentioned. That Lydia Varney Bennett was born in Alton, NH on 11 July 1816, so would have been around 54 in 1870. She died at the Wentworth Home for the Aged in Dover, NH on 24 May 1902, and the 1900 census shows that she never had children.

A wonderful and clear portrait photo. Her maiden name would have been Lydia Varney. It was found in Chester, Windsor County, Vermont.

Size: 2.5 by 4 inches
