Civil War: The 123rd NY at Wiki: "The 123rd New York Infantry was organized at Salem, New York and mustered in for three years service on September 4, 1862 under the command of Colonel Archibald Livingston McDougall. The 123rd New York Infantry was mustered out of service June 8, 1865. Recruits and veterans were transferred to the 60th New York Volunteer Infantry."

Gettysburg: The “Washington County Regiment” monument to the 123rd New York was dedicated in 1888 by the State of New York.

      This beautiful old CDV has Russel's stenciled name. We see other Civil War era CDV's identified as such, and they were done with a beautiful thin brass stencil in the 1860's. He is young and handsome, was this CDV taken on his way south to fight in the Civil War? There are many Smiths in Chenango County, New York where this was taken. It was found in Lincoln, Lancaster County, Nebraska. Russell was a soldier in the 123rd New York Volunteer Infantry Company F, and then a farmer by occupation. This is a famous Civil War regiment having fought at Gettysburg, Chancellorville and the seige of Atlanta.
