1942 Alfred Woollacott, Politician & Mayor of Fitchburg, Worcester MA

Here's a great original political flyer, also known as a "Palm Card", fitting nicely in the palm of your hand. This is from from Fitchburg, MA for 5 term Mayor Alfred Woollacott's unsuccessful run for Congress in 1942. Alfred E. Woollacott, born in 1892, was a Republican, and ran for Congress in the 1942 election, 3rd district. It has printed at bottom: "(Signed) John W. Parshley, 142 South Street, Fitchburg, MA."

Found in Public Genealogy Records:
From the Sentinel & Enterprise News: "Facts about Mayor Alfred Woollacott, as provided by family members and the Fitchburg Historical Society: He was born in 1892, and grew up on Phillips Street in West Fitchburg. He was one of 10 children. He began working at Ritter for Flowers while in high school and later bought the business, which he ran for years. His family's nickname for him was "Poppy". He served as a medic in France during World War I. While in France, he stayed with the family that owned Grey Poupon mustard. He ran for Congress: Massachusetts Third District just prior to World War II. Served 5 terms as mayor of Fitchburg 1938-1948, Woollacott: Started the Mayor's Hospital Fund, the Mayor's Milk Fund for children, and summer playground programs. Was instrumental in the creation of the Fitchburg Municipal Airport. Upset local Catholics by allowing contraceptives to be sold in city drug stores. Became popular with Finnish voters when he shared a sauna with the visiting first prime minister of Finland. While he was mayor, his older brother John served as city treasurer and his younger brother Ralph served as fire chief. He died in 1986 and is buried at Forest Hill Cemetery."

Political Graveyard Site: "Woollacott, Alfred of Fitchburg, Worcester County, Mass. Republican. Superintendent of schools; mayor of Fitchburg, Mass., 1938-48; candidate for U.S. Representative from Massachusetts 3rd District, 1942; alternate delegate to Republican National Convention from Massachusetts, 1944, 1948. Buried at Forest Hill Cemetery, Fitchburg, Mass."

This is a great and graphic WWII era flyer to advertise his run for Congress. Woollacott's family included two other mayors of Fitchburg. Woollcott is another spelling of this New England surname.
