1880s Josephine Carey's Daughter Photo, Cedar Rapids, Linn County Iowa

On reverse: "Jose Carey's Daughter" is handwritten in old pen ink. There are some stray ink marks as well in red and blue, they do not affect her image. Photo type: Original vintage Victorian CDV Carte de Visite Photo. Photographer: Cottage Gallery, 71 South Second Street. Cedar Rapids, Linn County, Iowa. (owned by by photographer Edward Lawrence Swem, Edward L. Swem, Edward Swem)

Found in Public Genealogy Records:
We found evidence of Josephine Carey in this area. Jose or Josie is a nickname for Josephine. Interestingly, this CDV photo was found in Palmer, Massachusetts. The only Iowa Josephine we found, her father was born in Massachusetts. We do not know if there is a connection, and much more Iowa Cary / Carey family research is needed.

Josephine Chaflin Cary and Myron Carey (or Cary) had a son Angus Sinclair Carey (or Cary). We see no evidence of a daughter in census records, although many times children who were born and died between census years, such as 1870-1880 or 1880-1890 do not show in any records. The small girl in this photo is about 4 years of age. Any help or correction appreciated, email Debra here.

A beautiful image of a beautiful young girl with a doll. The photo is light in tone, and has been enhanced here and in scans, to help seeing this Carey child more clearly. It was found in Berkshire County, Massachusetts.

Size: 2.5 x 4 inches.
