1870's Doctor Thomas Stabb Cabinet Photo, Ilfracombe, Devon, England
#752:
On reverse: "Thomas Stabb (Doctor at Ilfracome) grand g" is finely handwritten in old period pencil. A misspelling of Ilfracombe, and we believe the "grand g" stands for "Grandfather." Photo type: Original Vintage Victorian Cabinet Card Photograph. Photographer: C. Collis, Torquay, Devon, England. (known to be photographer Charles Collis 1837-1896, who also worked in London, England)
wiki: "Ilfracombe is a seaside resort and civil parish on the North Devon coast, England, with a small harbour surrounded by cliffs. In the early 1800's Welsh Miners were brought in to dig 4 tunnels through the cliffs to open the beaches to the public, which was finished in 1823. The beaches could now also be reached by horses and wagon. Dr. Thomas Stabb, a Torquay Surgeon who had relocated to Ilfracombe, helped form the "Ilfracombe Sea Bathing Company" which had low tide pool spas and gender segregated pools for the high Victorian crowd."

A wonderful early photo of medical doctor Thomas Stabb. The photo was found in Exeter, Devon, England, about 20 miles from Torquay, his birthplace. This is a wealthy and important Devon family, with deep 18th century ties to Newfoundland, then a British colony. A rare and intimate portrait, and by a well known photographer.
