1880's Abigail Jane Whittier CDV Photo, Boxford, Essex County, Mass

On reverse: "AJ Whittier, West Boxford, Mass" is handwritten in old pencil script at top. Also "2436" and "20 x 24" which probably delineates that larger copies were made of this carte de visite photograph or a crayon portrait, which were all the rage in the late 19th century. Photo type: Original Antique Victorian Carte de visite CDV Photograph. Photographer: Crayon Portrait Society, 179 Tremont St., Boston, Massachusetts, Suffolk & Middlesex County. (known to be Boston photographer Harry E. Lane, listed as an artist in census records)

This is a clean beautiful image of a Whittier Granny with wire rim eyeglasses and fine lace collar. The Whittier name is very well known in New England. John Greenleaf Whittier 1807-1892 was an influential American Quaker poet and ardent advocate of the abolition of slavery in the United States. He is usually listed as one of the Fireside Poets. Whittier was strongly influenced by the Scottish poet, Robert Burns. The 1829 John Greenleaf Whittier Home, is in Amesbury, MA. The author and abolitionist lived in the home 1836-92. The house remains almost unchanged and contains original furnishings.

She was born in 1848, and living in Boxford until she shows up in Haverhill, Massachusetts records in the 1910-1930 US census records. We feel very strongly that this AJ Whittier is her. A beautiful old Whittier family piece found in Stockbridge, Berkshire County, Massachusetts. We do not see evidence that she ever married.
