1840's Cattarine Catherine McCormick Dag Photo, Ukiah, Mendocino, CA

On front: "Mrs. Cattarine McCormick" is beautifully printed in brown sepia inks, and handwritten under it is "Our Mother" in old period fine pencil ink. Photo Type: Original Vintage Victorian CDV Carte de Visite Photograph, circa 1870’s, but is an 1870's copy of an earlier daguerreotype from the 1840-early 1850's. Photographer: Carpenter, Artist at the "Home Gallery", Ukiah, California, Mendocino County. (known to be famous California photographer A.O. Carpenter or Aurelius O. Carpenter 1836-1919, who with his wife Helen Carpenter ran their gallery called the “Home Gallery” from their Ukiah home. Note: Their daughter Grace Carpenter Hudson 1865-1937 worked in the family photography business as a child hand coloring photos, and may have added the printed sepia byline seen printed under this CDV and daguerreotype image. She is a well known California painter / artist)

Found in Public Genealogy Records:
Catharine McCormick is listed in the 1850 Federal Census in Kingston, Ulster Co. NY, born in Ireland in 1780 or 1775 and living with her son Michael McCormick at this time, at 70 years old. She also appears in the 1855 NY State census, living with her son, but is gone off census records by 1860. Michael and his wife Mary McCormick had several children, and there are other McCormicks in the Kingston/Catskill area, so any of them may have migrated to the Ukiah California area, and taken her photo with them to eventually be copied.

This is a reproduction done in the 1870's, a CDV photo of an earlier 1840's Daguerreotype image of her, a beloved mother. It has a beautiful printed script under her photo which appears to say "Mrs. Cattarine McCormick", although her first name could be Catharine. This was being done at this time, and was all the rage.

NOTE: This does not mean that she herself lived in California, but suggests that her children may have migrated there, for the 1849 CA Gold Rush? The handwritten clue "Our Mother" refers to more than one of her children, thus we feel she had family there.

Her family member would have paid Mr. AO Carpenter, Ukiah photographer to copy an early daguerreotype image to distribute to the larger family, or to put into a McCormick family CDV photo album. Do you have later McCormick related family in the 19th century in the Mendocino County, CA?

It was found in Kingston, Ulster County, New York NY. A beautiful old piece. We believe her to be about 50-60 years of age, as she was born about 1780-1800. Daguerreotypes first arrived in the US in the 1840's. She was much loved to have prompted her family to copy her early image or "likeness" as they would say. A wonderful early American McCormick family piece.
