1870 William Wyndham Baring Esq. Photo, Evershot, Dorset, England

#515:

This is a beautiful old Victorian gilt and black wood framed albumen photo, recently found in Honiton, Devon, England. It dates from the late 1860's to early 1870's, and the image is of William Wyndham Baring 1826–1876, known to be a barrister, standing next to his donkey cart with his named beautifully painted on the cart. He died in 1876. The title Esq. is used as an honorific, generally in its abbreviated form, and in use especially after the name of an attorney or a consular officer. In English law, this is a title of dignity which would prove to be next above a gentleman, and below a knight. A "Barrister" is a lawyer, solicitor or attorney entitled to practice as an advocate, particularly in the higher courts.

The cart sign reads:

Death Age: 50
Birth Year: abt 1826
Burial Date: 24 Nov 1876
Burial Place: Evershot, Dorset, England

We believe William Baring Esqure did not practice law. He is buried in Evershot at the Evershot Saint Osmund Churchyard, 1 Back Lane in Evershot, Dorset, England. This is a one of a kind original image, very rare, in beautiful sepia depth. His foot is perched up upon a cast iron tying or carriage post. There is a sign on door behind, illegible to us. This sign could be possibly read if photo was removed from the early frame and scanned at high resolution. We did not remove the image from original sealed frame, thus we do not know if there are any markings inside. There are two old round brass hanger rings on the reverse of he frame, and the original glass. We present it just as found in our photos, taken with a camera. A beautiful old genealogy piece.
