1880's William Benjamin Hand 2 Photos Cornell University & Nyack NY
#452 Hand Genealogy, Hand Family:
c. 1880s 2 Identical Cabinet Card Photos:
On reverse: "Compliments of Wm. B. Hand, Nyack, N.Y." is handwritten in old period dip pen ink. Also written in pencil, by a different hand, is "Ithaca, N.Y." The photographer is assumed to be William Benjamin Hand 1871-1931, who studied architecture and photography at Cornell University in the 19th century.
These are 2 of the same photos of a very stately stone and brick building with a young African American girl standing in front, looking very small in scale with the large granite building. 3 women look out of doorway, all people are very small and can only be seen with magnification. We believe this to be an early pair of photos of Cornell University Campus in Ithaca, Tompkins County, New York. William B. Hand was a Cornell graduate.
Found in Public Genealogy Records:
In the 1924 Nyack Directory, William B. is a contractor, as is his brother, Walter Staats Hand. Others in the household are their siblings, Mary Hall Hand and Roger Haddock Hand. Raymond Hand, Walter's son, is listed as a student. Nyack, New York, is in Rockland County, and Ithaca is in Tompkins County. These 2 photos were found in Monroe County NY. William B. Hand, the Nyack contractor or builder lived from 1837 to 1898.
Cornell Obituary of William B. Hand Class of 1892 from: Cornell Alumni News, Vol. 33, No. 16, Jan 1931, p.193: "William Benjamin Hand died on April 18. He was born in New York on April 2 1871, the son of William H. Hand and Mary Elizabeth Hand. He received the degree of B.S. in Architecture. He was a member of the Camera Club and the Architectural Sketch Club."

Also, a Mr. William Hand of Nyack was an assistant to Thomas Edison. We do not know if there is a connection to this family or not, but assume so. A beautiful old piece of history. William was a photographer and member of the camera club and it is assumed he took these 2 great photos.
