1870's Thomas Cabban signed CDV Photo, Greenwich, Kent County, England

#764:

On reverse: "Thomas Cabban" is handwritten in old period pencil. Photo type: Original Vintage Victorian CDV Photograph, circa 1870. Photographer: Royal Park Photographic Studio, Glenton House, Greenwich S.E., County Kent, England. It has the printed signature, in gold inks of Sam Sims. (Photographer Samuel Sims 1827-1891 worked at this exact address from 1869-1874, thus the dating of this photo. He was also the photographer of the Royal Naval College. S. Sims was from famous family of English Victorian photographers: Edward Sims, Frances Sims, Richard Lang Sims, Thomas Sims, Thomas Bond Sims, William Arthur Sims, and Thomas & Edward Sims.)

Interestingly, Thomas Cabban's occupation is listed as a "Silk Mercer" in English census records. We had to go look it up. It is a British term for a dealer in fine textiles and fabrics, in use from the 12th century. It derives from Old French "mercier," a notions dealer, or merchant, merchandise. Now obsolete, it referred to non-local silk, linen, and textiles that were imported into England. Other related occupations would be haberdasher, draper and cloth merchant.
