1870 Sarah Niblock McKelvie's Grave Photo, Stranraer, Wigton, Scotland


This is a beautiful and unusual old and original 1869 CDV photo of a Scottish cemetery grave monument, which was erected by 2 loving sons to their mother, Sarah Niblock McKelvie, who died in 1869. Etched inscription on Victorian gravestone reads: John and James McKelvie at the top. "In memory of their mother Sarah Niblock who died at Stranraer August 23rd 1869 aged 67 years, spouse of Andrew McKelvie, Land Steward, Ballywillwill. "Angels hover o'er me, singing! Onward nearer come they now; Farewell daughter! cease thy weeping; Kiss once more my burning brow," In lower right it is signed by R WOOD (the stone Artist or Sculptor)

Parents: Sarah was the the daughter of William Kniblo and Agnes McGuffog, born in 1800 at Cairn, Kirkmaiden, Scotland. She is listed as the "natural" child of William and Agnes, which is generally defined as children born out of wedlock.

Spouse: Andrew McKelvie 1800–1887, they married 1823 at Stoneykirk. He was a land steward on the Ballywillwill estate in County Down, which is in Northern Ireland. He is assumed to have died there before 1851, as Sarah and her children are listed as a "widow" in the 1851 census.

Kirkcolm is a village and civil parish on the northern tip of the Rhinns of Galloway peninsula in Dumfries and Galloway, and is part of the former county of Wigtownshire. Kirkmaiden is a parish in the Rinns of Galloway, the most southerly in Scotland. Greenock, home of the photographer is within the historic county of Renfrewshire, west central Lowlands of Scotland."

We believe this gravestone to be in Kirkmaiden Old Churchyard / cemetery in Kirkmaiden village, although we are not 100% certain. Any help or correction appreciated, email Debra here.

This is a wonderful old original antique Scotish piece and a photo of a beautiful gravestone erected by the McKelvie family. The photographer, David Straiton, would also have been commissioned by the family to take this early old CDV photo on a warm summer day sometime in 1869 or the early 1870's. The surnames are also seen spelled as Kniblo, Niblick, Nibloe, Kniblo, Niblo, Nibloe and Niblack. It was found in Calvert, Buckinghamshire, England.
