1860's Rev. Reese Alsop CDV Photo, Father of Flicka Author Mary O'Hara

#024:
Father of American writer Mary O'Hara, writer of "My Friend Flicka"

On reverse: "Reece Alsop" is handwritten in old period pencil. Photo type: CDV Carte de Visite Photograph. Date: circa 1860s Civil War era. Photographer: Unmarked, Unknown.

In August 1864 to August 1866, the US government taxed photographs to help pay for the American Civil war. Revenue stamps were placed on the back of photos, and “hand cancelled" by the photographer. CDV's with revenue stamps are collectible for stamp and vintage photography collectors. It is a way to date a Civil War era photograph. This CDV has a partial blue 2 cent revenue stamp, which dates it 1864-66.

This family photo is trimmed on 4 corner edges, as seen in photos. It was done to fit into tight paper photo albums, as most were. It does not affect his actual image in any way.

This is a beautiful Civil War image of a young Reece, holding his large top hat. He is wearing a wool Civil War era sack coat. It was found in Wilmington, Delaware, in New Castle County. It appears, although raised a Quaker, that Rev. Alsop later was rector of St. Ann's Church in Brooklyn. We also found the spelling of his unusual surname as Alsup, Allsopp, and Allsop and his first name spelled as Reese or Reece.

He is the father of famous American writer and screenwriter, Mary O'hara above, who wrote My Friend Flicka. A rare historical piece.
