1870-80's Joachim Henry Panzenhagen (Penzenhagen) Tintype Photo

On reverse: "Henry Penzenhagen" is handwritten in pencil on a piece of the old photo album sleeve, which someone taped on reverse. Note spelling, we believe, according to our census work, that the correct spelling is Panzenhagen. Also could be Penzenhager, Panzenhager. Photo type: Vintage Victorian era Tintype Photograph. Photographer: Unknown, Unmarked.

Found in Public Genealogy Records:
Henry Panzenhagen is found in Onawa, Monona, Iowa in the 1900 census, listed as born April 1846 in Germany. His father was also Joachim Heinrich Panzenhagen and lived in Bucholz, Germany. We have evidence Henry was discharged from the Prussian Army in 1871. He frequently changed his name using John, Henry, Joachim, Johacim, and Heinrich.

Henry married Frederica, with children Franz (also known as Frank), Clara, Bernard and Magnus (also seen as Mangnus). Public records show that at least two of his children died in North Dakota, one as recently as 1971.

He may be the J Henry Panzenhagen (born 26 July 1846-died 18 Feb 1917) who is buried in Yellow Medicine County, Minnesota. Also found a death record for Joachim Henry Panzenhagen, born 1847, died 18 Feb 1917 in Boyd, Lac Qui Parle, Minnesota, parents Joachim Panzenhagen & Friederika Lenter.

Henry Panzenhagen, wife Fredricka, and sons Bernhard & Magnus were living in Burton, Yellow Medicine, MN in the 1910 Census. Daughter Clara Panzenhagen Carstens is buried in Tolley, Renville, North Dakota. In the 1920 census, "Ferderick" Panzenhagen, widow, 65, is living with her son-in-law Gust(av) Carstens, her daughter Clara and the Carstens children in Sauk Prairie, Ward, North Dakota. We think it's a pretty good bet that the photo above is definitely her late husband J Henry Panzenhagen.

A beautiful old tintype photo of Henry, who appears a bit older than the wedding photo we have of him and his bride on our site. He appears to be in his thirties. It was found in Devils Lake, North Dakota, which is in Ramsey County.

Also see this CDV wedding photo of Henry and his wife found with this photo, #028 on our site here. The family has Germany, German roots.
