On reverse: "Joseph R. Chandler 1880" is handwritten and possiby autographed in old dip pen ink. In another hand in different old dip pen ink is handwritten: "Died July 10th 1880 at his Residence, No. 155 N. 10th St, Philadelphia, aged 88 years." In another hand, in pencil is handwritten "Senate / Congress, Editor of the U.S. Gazette." Photo type: Original Antique Victorian Cabinet Card Photograph, dated 1880. Photographer: F. Gutekunst, 712 Arch St., Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Montgomery, Philadelphia or Schuylkill County. (known to be famous Philadelphia photographer Frederick Gutekunst 1831-1917)

Joseph R. Chandler or Joseph Ripley Chandler 1792-1880 of Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania. He was born in Kingston, Plymouth County, Massachusetts.

Joseph Chandler was a U.S. Representative, Pennsylvania 2nd District from 1849-55 and a U.S. Minister to Two Sicilies in 1858. He died in Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania in 1880, at age 87. He is buried at the New Cathedral Cemetery, Philadelphia, Pa. His congressional biography can be found here

This beautiful old photo is slightly trimmed on edges, usually to fit into the tight Victorian paper photo album sleeves. It does not affect his actual image in any way.
