12 Victorian CDV Photos of the Harry Jocelyn Jeffries Family, London

#775 Jeffries Genealogy:

Harry Jocelyn Jeffries (1855-1920) was a well known art dealer, gilder, and London picture framer. A gilder is one who "gilds" or overlays with gold, also referred to as "guilder." These 12 Victorian identified CDV carte de visite family photos were the property of Harry J. Jeffries and he autographed and boldly signed many. We assume these photographs were removed from an early Victorian paper photo album, which often do not stand the test of time.

In early census records, Harry's occupation was a joiner or carpenter, presumably in picture frames. He then was in partnership with (H.E. Mealand), Harry Edward Mealand in a company called "Lambert & Co." who are listed in business directories as gilders, carvers, picture frame makers and art decorators at 36 Albert Gate and also at 7 Knightsbridge Green.

3. On reverse: "Herbert Holgate Jeffries (9 months old), Reproduced in July of 1938" is handwritten in bold fountain pen script. This is an interesting clear copy of an early 1850's photograph, printed on heavy 1930's cardstock. Harry is a smiling toddler on his mother Eleanor's lap, the original would have been taken about 1856.

4. On reverse: "Kate Ellen Tingcombe, nee Jeffries, Aunt Kate, aged about 17" in old fountain pen script. Photographer: Artist, Photographer & Miniature Portrait Painter Sidney W. Jeffries" is beautifully and boldly signed in sepia colour ink script. Photographer: Stacey, Photo, Dunmow. She appears about 30 years old, a guess.

12. On reverse: "Mrs. Edbrook, Aunt Harriet's Mother" is handwritten in old period pencil. Photographer: D.H. Speakman, late Stortz, Artist & Photographer, 6 1/2 Upper Parade, Leamington. (known to be owned by earlier photographer Philip Christian Stortz and then bought by D.H.
